The Chartered Institute of Business Intelligence and Analytics (CIBIA) is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct in the field of Business Intelligence, Data Analytics, and related disciplines. All members, regardless of grade, are expected to uphold the principles outlined in this Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct. Adherence ensures public trust, professional credibility, and the advancement of the analytics profession.


Core Ethical Principles

All CIBIA members are expected to demonstrate:

  1. Integrity:
    • Act honestly, fairly, and transparently in all professional dealings.
    • Avoid conflicts of interest and disclose any potential ethical dilemmas.
    • Maintain accuracy and truthfulness in data reporting, analysis, and presentation.
  2. Professional Competence and Due Care:
    • Continuously develop knowledge, skills, and expertise through learning and professional development.
    • Deliver services competently, responsibly, and with diligence.
    • Ensure that analyses, insights, and recommendations are based on sound methodology and evidence.
  3. Confidentiality and Data Protection:
    • Respect the confidentiality of clients, employers, colleagues, and stakeholders.
    • Protect sensitive and proprietary information and comply with all applicable data protection laws and regulations.
    • Use data ethically, avoiding misuse, misrepresentation, or unauthorized disclosure.
  4. Objectivity and Independence:
    • Provide unbiased, objective, and evidence-based advice or analysis.
    • Avoid undue influence from personal, financial, or political interests that could compromise judgment.
    • Report findings and recommendations impartially, even when inconvenient to stakeholders.
  5. Respect, Fairness, and Non-Discrimination:
    • Treat colleagues, clients, and stakeholders with respect and dignity.
    • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace and the profession.
    • Avoid all forms of discrimination, harassment, or exploitation.
  6. Responsible Leadership and Stewardship:
    • Act in the best interest of the public, the profession, and the organizations served.

Professional Responsibilities

CIBIA members are expected to:

  • Maintain Professional Competence: Continuously engage in learning and development, including CPD activities, to stay current with industry trends and best practices.
  • Comply with Laws and Regulations: Observe all applicable local, national, and international laws, regulations, and professional standards.
  • Promote Ethical Use of Analytics: Ensure that data and analytics are applied responsibly, avoiding harm or unethical manipulation.
  • Support Transparency: Communicate findings, recommendations, and reports clearly and accurately, without misleading stakeholders.
  • Mentor and Guide Others: Encourage ethical practice among junior colleagues, students, and peers.

Accountability and Enforcement

  • All members are personally responsible for adhering to the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
  • Violations may result in disciplinary action, including suspension or revocation of membership, depending on the severity of the breach.
  • The Institute’s Ethics and Professional Standards Committee oversees compliance, investigates complaints, and ensures fair and transparent enforcement procedures.
