Examination Framework
The Chartered Institute of Business Intelligence and Analytics (CIBIA) provides a structured, rigorous, and globally recognized Examination Framework to develop and validate professional competence in Business Intelligence and Analytics (BIA).
The framework is independent of membership grades and consists of six progressive levels, each with five core modules, ensuring continuous learning, professional development, and mastery. Completion of each level results in a formal award in Business Intelligence and Analytics, supporting career progression and Continuous Professional Development (CPD).
Level 1: Foundation in Business Intelligence & Analytics
Purpose:
Introduces candidates to core concepts, foundational tools, and professional standards in BIA. Ensures competence in data collection, management, visualization, basic analytics techniques, and professional ethics, preparing candidates for entry-level roles or further study.

Award upon Completion:

Level 2: Applied Analytics & Data Management
Purpose:
Develops practical skills in data processing, analysis, and visualization. Candidates learn to clean, structure, interpret, and present data ethically, contributing effectively to organizational analytics functions.

Level 3: Advanced Analytics & Decision Support
Purpose:
Focuses on advanced analytics for strategic decision-making. Candidates integrate predictive and prescriptive analytics into decision support systems, developing leadership skills and ethical reasoning for professional practice.

Level 4: Strategic Analytics & Business Innovation
Purpose:
Develops strategic analytics and leadership capabilities, preparing candidates to align analytics with business strategy, drive innovation, and manage performance measurement. Ethical and sustainable analytics practices are integrated throughout.

CIBIA Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Business Intelligence & Analytics – Recognizes advanced strategic, leadership, and professional analytics competence at a postgraduate level.
Level 5: Executive Analytics & Organizational Leadership
Purpose:
Prepares candidates for executive-level analytics roles, emphasizing enterprise-wide strategy, governance, advanced research, and innovation leadership. Candidates develop the ability to lead analytics teams, influence decision-making, and drive organizational transformation.

Examination Guidelines
- Eligibility
- Candidates must meet the academic and professional requirements for the level being attempted.
- Completion of required CPD hours may be mandatory for higher-level examinations.
- Registration and Scheduling
- Candidates must register in advance through the official CIBIA portal.
- Examination sessions may be online, in-person, or blended, depending on availability.
- Conduct and Professionalism
- All candidates must adhere to the CIBIA Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct.
- Any form of malpractice or dishonesty (e.g., plagiarism, collusion) will result in disciplinary action, including suspension or disqualification.
- Assessment Submission Requirements
- Written work, projects, and portfolios must meet format, word count, and submission deadlines.
- Late or incomplete submissions may not be accepted or will incur penalties.
- Appeals and Reassessment
- Candidates may appeal results under the CIBIA Examination Appeals Procedure.
- Failed modules may be re-attempted according to CIBIA schedules, with defined limits on retakes.
- Language and Accessibility
- All examinations are conducted in English.
- Reasonable accommodations are provided for candidates with disabilities or special needs upon request.
Examination Methodology
CIBIA assessments are multifaceted, ensuring holistic evaluation of candidate competence:
- Written Examinations – Test conceptual knowledge, analytical reasoning, and technical proficiency.
- Case Study Analysis – Evaluate the ability to apply analytics to real-world business scenarios, including recommendations and justifications.
- Project-Based Assessment – Demonstrate practical application of BIA tools and techniques to organizational or simulated data.
- Portfolio Assessment (Levels 5 & 6) – Document leadership, innovation, research contributions, and strategic impact.
- Oral/Presentation Assessment – Assess communication skills, analytical reasoning, and professional judgment.
- Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Integration – CPD hours may be required to support eligibility, particularly at advanced levels.
Grading and Assessment
- Minimum Pass Mark: 50% per module.
- Competency-Based Assessment: Candidates must meet minimum standards across all modules to be awarded the level certificate.
- Assessment Weighting (Indicative):
- Written Exams: 40–50%
- Case Studies: 20–25%
- Project/Portfolio: 20–25%
- Oral/Presentation: 10–15%
- Distinction or Merit: Candidates demonstrating exceptional performance may be recognized with distinction or merit, noted on the certificate.
Exemption Guidelines
CIBIA recognizes prior learning, professional qualifications, and relevant experience for exemptions to encourage progression without unnecessary repetition.
Academic Qualification Exemptions
- Recognized degrees, postgraduate diplomas, or certifications in Business Intelligence, Analytics, Data Science, IT, Statistics, or related fields may qualify for exemptions from specific modules.
- Documentation Required: Certified transcripts, syllabi, or official letters from institutions.
Professional Experience Exemptions
- Candidates with demonstrable experience in analytics, data management, business intelligence, or strategic decision support may apply for exemptions.
- Evidence Required:
- Letters of reference from employers
- Detailed job descriptions
- Portfolio of work demonstrating relevant competencies
Level-Based Exemptions
- Foundation and Applied Levels (Levels 1–2): Exemptions may apply to candidates with prior academic certificates or diplomas.
- Advanced and Executive Levels (Levels 3–5): Exemptions may be granted based on professional experience, prior certifications, or previous higher education relevant to strategic analytics and leadership.
- Master/Executive Level (Level 6): Exemptions are rarely granted; candidates must demonstrate research, strategic impact, and leadership experience.
Exemption Application Process
- Candidates submit an Exemption Request Form along with all supporting documentation to the CIBIA Examinations Board.
- Exemptions are evaluated individually based on relevance, quality, and equivalency of prior learning or experience.
- Decisions are communicated within 30 days of submission.
- Approved exemptions allow candidates to skip specific modules or replace assessments, but all remaining modules must be completed to earn the award.
Limitations and Notes
- Exemptions do not reduce CPD requirements for membership upgrade or level progression.
- Exemption approvals are valid only for the specific examination cycle and are non-transferable to other candidates.
